[...] Just asking students to report on their opinions, or share their consumer habits, or answer simple questions, can change the direction of the lecture or lesson plan. Polling them on their comprehension of the material covered last week gives students fast feedback, so they can see whether they are “getting it” (and of course, I can see that too, and perhaps backtrack…). And as any employer or teacher or parent knows, millennials expect and thrive on frequent feedback. [...]

Great post! Wouldn't you have loved these kinds of classes when you were in school?

I know I would have. (In the 80s) :)

Those instructors who used the most visual approach of the time, and those who could use real life examples are the ones who made the most impact on me.

I hated paying $100's for text books, so I look for less expensive books that can be kept around as resources.

Yes, the tools and resources are different, so the expectations are that the best professors will use them.

Tanner: My sense is that most professors really are clueing in to the fact that this generation is different. There have been many articles and it doesn't take long (or many sleeping students) to get the message. The professors I know are passionate about teaching and willing to share their stories.

I am an adjunct at Notre Dame, and have successfully convinced two of my business colleagues to begin an adjunct teaching career in Marketing. One is at Haas School of Business at UCLA-Berkeley and loving it. The other is at U of Missouri - Kansas City. I do think the marketing skills translate well to the classroom, we are accustomed to communicating and thinking about how to engage an audience.

Thanks for your comments. Carol

Don: I didn't know that, thanks for the shout outs! I should credit the Kaneb Center and the support I have gotten at Notre Dame for much of my progress. They really don't put you out there with a 'sink or swim' approach. The help is there if you ask for it. Can't say enough good things about Notre Dame -- as a professor, a parent of a student and as a vendor. Carol

Dana: It sounds as if you have some of the 'classic' characteristics of Gen Y. Those characteristics are what makes your generation unique and what will make them uniquely successful. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Carol

Wow, great post. I wish all the people I spoke to at ND would listen to you on this. I don't know if you know this but I have an auto feed of your blog into the Notre Dame Campus Communicators on Linkedin.

This is a very interesting article. I love the passion from which you speak. Technically a Millennial myself, I tend to have some of these traits, such as competing for attention and loving multi-media. that might be why I am involved in internet marketing and team collaboration solutions like OnePlace. They seem to go hand-in-hand in my personal life and my business, and I like seeing that others in my generation are interested in the same thing.

I am glad to see professors beginning to implement a more interactive classroom instead of the boring text filled powerpoint slides.

The ones that tell stories with relevant and up to date information while also teaching a subject matter through an occasional YouTube video here or there seems to work. If a video has been created and makes the complex easier to understand then why not show it? Its not being lazy, its being smart and efficient and tailoring to the visual learners that many of us Gen Yers are.

The Professors that are outdated, stubborn, not willing to make connections and build relationships with professors will continue to lose. Maybe all Professors should be required to Marketing 101 before teaching.
