one essential aspect of building a brand via social media is understand how to control and utilize it There's also an excellent whitepaper download from Palo Alto Networks, “To Block or Not. Is that the question?” here: http://bit.ly/d2NZRp. It has lots of insightful and useful information about identifying and controlling Enterprise 2.0 apps (Facebook, Twitter, Skype, AIM, etc.)

Thanks for your insight in this post. I agree 100%. Our company has had a lot of success using social media to build our brand. We've been able to create an online identity - really to share who we are and connect with people in our community - in a way that simply was not possible for us to do with just traditional marketing.

Thanks for the feedback on the title! I guess it is a little pedestrian. I teach brand strategy so the question is more than just a casual interest. Perhaps there is a new way of building brands emerging that includes social media but is bigger than that, perhaps has more to do with brand purpose (as in larger purpose) than benefits, lifestyle or economic utility. I'll rethink the title, but glad you enjoyed the article.

Though my first reaction to the title itself was that it was oxymoronic question, this is a terrific, thought-provoking article. Per the section on Dynamic being a terrific descriptor, I keep borrowing from the cable industry and find myself referring to social media as True Two Way (see tru2way®). And, in terms of replacing other methods for brand differentiation, with the onslaught of Promoted Tweets and NBC's pay for mentions, I think the more things change the more.... It's just a matter of time before dynamic media or social media is just media that marketers learn to master for their clients.
